Forensic Psychologist |
 |
| A forensic psychologist is specially trained Ph.D. psychologist who uses the knowledge of psychology and his/her experience to offer an expert psychological
opinions in a way that it impacts on the legal arena, typically involving civil and criminal law and the courts. Many people think of forensic psychologists as focusing on criminal matters. While this is
certainly an area of focus, a forensic psychologist frequently does much more. |
Definition of a Forensic Psychologist |
Forensic Psychology, Educational Psychology, School Psychology, and
Clinical Psychology are four of the main specialty areas and Board Certification areas in the field of Psychology.
A forensic psychologist, by virtue of specialized advanced training and experience may assist a client, attorney, court, or other fact finder in arriving at a just or correct decision. For example, a forensic
psychologist may assist in a wide variety of civil matters including, but are not limited to, adoption, separation, divorce, custody, competency issues, lawsuits or insurance claims where emotional suffering
is a part of the claim, determination of competency of an aged or ill person to make decisions, whether a death was an accident or a "disguised suicide" in an insurance claim case, or in a wide
variety of other areas.
Becoming a forensic typically requires the person get a doctorate in psychology, often (but not necessarily) in clinical psychology or counseling psychology. It frequently
takes about seven years after the undergraduate degree to get this doctorate, though some people may take a little less time.
After obtaining considerable experience and continuing education, some forensic psychologists go on to become 'Board Certified' in the specialty area of forensic psychology. The best known certification
board is the American Board of Forensic Psychology, which offers the title of 'Diplomate' to people who meet its standards and pass its rigorous oral and written examination
process. Due to the rigorous nature of the Diplomate, most psychologists practicing in the area of forensic psychology are not 'Board Certified'.
Persons who are involved in civil or criminal litigation can find a forensic psychologist very valuable. More information about a Forensic Psychologist and how a Forensic Psychologist may be able
