Definition of Self-Esteem |
Self esteem is the opinion you have of yourself. It is based on how you value yourself as a person, the job you do, your achievements, how you think others
see you, what you see as your strengths and weaknesses, your perceived social status and how others relate to you, your sense of independence, and your ability to stand on your own merits.
Positive or high self-esteem consists of the positive thoughts and feelings you have about yourself. It affects how you think, act, and feel about others, as well as how successful you are in life.
Self-esteem is not competitive or comparative, but rather it is the state where a person is at peace with himself or herself. It means that we appreciate ourselves and our personal worth,
we have a positive attitude about ourselves and our abilities, we see ourselves as competent and in control of our own lives, and are able to do what we want. Positive or high self esteem is critical if
you are to have a positive attitude towards living.
On the other side, low self esteem results from you having a poor self-image caused by your attitude to one or more of the factors mentioned above. Low self-esteem can result in your feeling helpless, powerless
and often feeling depressed.
There are many reasons why men and women suffer from low self-esteem. Perceived lack of self-worth, uncontrollable jealousy, relationship break-ups, high levels of anxiety or stress, inability to think
positively, mild depression, and many other issues affect our self-esteem. Most people feel badly about themselves from time to time, and this is very normal. However, low self-esteem is common for too
many people, especially those who experience depression, anxiety, phobias, delusional thinking, addiction,
or who have an illness or a disability. If you are one of these people, you may go through life feeling bad about yourself needlessly. |
Treatment of Self-Esteem Problems
|
Psychological therapy and life coaching can be very effective at building self-esteem and self-confidence. A psychotherapist or life
coach can offer you a wide variety of self-help resources and provide practical solutions to self-esteem problems.
With my clients I use a variety of therapeutic methods and typically start by focusing on what to do and what not to do. For example, the "do list" will
focus on your needs and desires, on your strengths and successes, on using positive affirmations and visualization, on developing and working to achieve your goals, and on trusting your intuition and your
feelings to make the right decisions. On the other side is the "do not list": do not always try to please others; don't neglect yourself; don't be overly self- critical; don't pretend to be anything that
you're not; and don't listen to other's who try to convince you that you are dumb, uncaring, wrong, or any other negative thing.
Life and living is difficult and even your best efforts will not always successful. But having a healthy and realistic sense of self-esteem can assist you in managing the ups and downs
of life and help you to achieve the success and happiness you deserve. |
